Thea Bjerg, textile art
Thomas Neukirch, painting
Showcasing new textile designs by Danish designer Thea Bjerg and canvas paintings by Andalucia-based artist Thomas Neukirch. "Movement" figures as a prominent theme in both parts of the exhibition.
On first glance, Thea Bjerg’s pleated scarves appear to be textile sculptures. Once they are physically held, however, the artistic folds and layers begin to move fluidly. Masterfully folded, the scarves straddle the lines between accessories, textiles, and fashion.
Thea Bjerg’s works are rooted in the tradition of Danish textile art. Using state-of-the-art techniques such as laser-cutting and ultrasonics, she is able to create diaphanous, sensuous accessories.
The terrain of southern Spain and the Mediterranean lifestyle serve as inspirations for the paintings of Thomas Neukirch. In a fascinating way, he captures the movements of people, water, desolate fields, and even gnarled olive trees. Neukirch’s painting style has been shaped by his academic training in Lyon, and particularly by his time in Paris as a student of Jean Bertholle’s, during which there was an emphasis on color contrast, lighting, spatiality, and composition.
Neukirch’s distinctly picturesque painting style and his bold brushstrokes and colors highlight the movements he depicts, which are particularly evident in his series of "pool images."
His depiction of modern technology in his paintings reflects the importance of cars, computers, etc. for life on an isolated island. Thomas Neukirch lives and works in Andalucia.
