Till Leeser, Photographic Works

For its upcoming exhibition, titled "Messages," Werft 11 will present works by Till Leeser created in 2009 and 2010 during the artist’s stay in Beijing. The exhibition will begin on 03 September and remain open through 16 October.

Messages, Dispatches, Rallying Cries
Till Leeser has photographed untold numbers of walls and façades in China. The surfaces he captures contain messages – utterances, dispatches, rallying cries – that have been painted over in censorship.

Many of Leeser’s images betray a choreography of chaos: in every disarray a certain order and rhythm materialize. His cropping shuts out everything that might explain a picture’s origin. At first blush the images appear to be abstract paintings. Only on closer inspection do they reveal themselves as photos.

Born in Schweinfurt, Germany, Till Leeser studied photography, art and design at the Folkwangschule, where he worked with Otto Steinert and Willi Fleckhaus.

He has worked in Hamburg as a freelance photographer and artist since 1979. He regularly travels to China to photograph advertising campaigns for international car manufacturers.
