Andrea Esswein, Photocopier Art
From 09 May to 18 June 2010 the Werft11 Gallery presents "Dream Day", an exhibition of photocopier art by Andrea Esswein that thematizes the dream of eternal happiness epitomized by the wedding day. Esswein’s work interrogates the culturally determined roles of women in our society. Her series of wedding gowns and accessories call attention to the transience of moments and things.
Andrea Esswein puts objects and people on the photocopier’s glass plate, cuts the resulting pages and fashions them into collages. The paper leaves and the overlapping images remain visible after subsequent varnishing and testify to a process of fragmentation. The strongly contrasting and theatrical collages display Esswein’s objective: not to reproduce reality but to construct it anew. Using the photocopier like a camera, Esswein produces double portraits that look like snapshots.
Andrea Esswein lives and works in Wiesbaden.
