Opulenz und Purismus

Opulenz und Purismus
4 Sep 2009 - 16 Oct 2009

Maike Dahl, silver
Grita Götze, ceramic

Under the programmatic title "Opulence and Purism", the Werft 11 gallery presents two striking and exceptional artists whose contrasts show the subtlety and diversity of contemporary design. From September 4th to October 16th.

The opulent vases and decorative wall plates of the ceramicist Grita Götze blur the line between applied arts and fine arts. Her intricate and colorful objects are adorned with ornamental and figurative inventions using human, animal, and plant motifs. The forms and images of her work allude to Classical Antiquity, the Baroque and Art Nouveau. They show unadulterated pleasure in lively, experimental design and an irrepressible urge to play with material, form, and color.

For her part, the metal designer Maike Dahl returns silverware to the table. Her objects, produced with virtuosic skill, ironically allude to the purist forms of design found in packaging, take-out containers, and fast-food flatware. These exquisite items for everyday use display extraordinary structure and harmonious design—an uber-modern interpretation of tableware and hand-crafted art.

Grita Götze (1959) was born in Schlema, Saxony. She completed training in pottery and ceramics at the Hochschule für Industrielle Formgestaltung Halle in Burg Giebichenstein. Since 1988 she has run her own studio in Halle, where she produces vases as well as wall and floor ceramics for public and private buildings.

Maike Dahl (1969) was born in Großburgwedel, Lower Saxony. She is a goldsmith who studied metal design in London and Hildesheim. Since 1998 she has worked in her own studio in Hanover, and has taught as guest lecturer in England and Germany.
